Murder accused surrenders

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JUNE 5. A 23-year-old man and his cousin have been arrested by the South Delhi police for allegedly killing a 20-year-old woman, whose body was found at Lajpat Nagar in South Delhi on May 28 night.

According to the police, Ashish, a resident of Garhi village in Lajpat Nagar, surrendered in the court on Tuesday following sustained pressure from the police. He was remanded to police custody and following interrogation he confessed to having killed the woman and also revealed the name of Sandip, his cousin, as an accomplice in the incident. Subsequently, Sandip was also arrested.

The incident had come to light when someone informed the police about the body of a woman lying in front of a house at D- Block in East of Kailash, Lajpat Nagar around 9-30 p.m. The body was identified as that of Sapna, daughter of a "paan'' shop- owner in Garhi. There was a deep cut mark on her neck and all other articles, like watch and some jewellery, were found to be intact. The police had therefore ruled out robbery as the motive and suspected the involvement of someone known to the woman behind the incident.

Investigations and inquiries revealed that Ashish, who knew Sapna, had been missing from his house since the incident. A search at his native place in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, also did not yield any result. Finally, Ashish surrendered.

Ashish told the police that he was having an affair with Sapna and wanted to marry her. Sapna, however, did not want to marry him. On the fateful day, he asked Sandip to join him in pressurising Sapna into marrying him. They met in a dark service lane of D-Block. Once again Ashish brought up the topic of marriage. When Sapna refused, he got angry and attacked her with a knife.
