PRTU wants schools to reopen on July 1

By Our Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD JUNE 5. The Progressive Recognised Teachers Union (PRTU) has asked the State Government to issue directions to all Government schools and private school managements to reopen the schools on July 1, in view of the heat wave conditions in the State.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the PRTU State president, B. Mohan Reddy, said arrangements were being made to reopen the schools as per schedule. Though the State Government had extended the date of reopening by a week, it was not sufficient, the PRTU chief said, adding that children studying in Government schools would be the worst sufferers if the schools were reopened immediately.

Mr. Mohan Reddy asked the Government to come up with permanent solution to the mid-day meal scheme. He said the Government should first construct a full-fledged kitchen, provide drinking water source and appoint a full-time cook. It was not fair to seek the services of the DWCRA and SHG groups in implementation of the mid-day meal scheme.

The PRTU leader took exception taking the district as a unit. in counselling. He said the Government should follow the old system taking mandal as a unit. He said there was confusion among the teaching community and every body was worried about their transfers from one mandal to some remote places. He urged the Government to revert to the old system of mandal as a unit and do justice to teachers and allay their fears.

He said the complimentary messages sent to the teachers by the Chief Minister and the School Education Minister for the excellent results in the school examinations were heartening. However, he said, the teachers would strive to ensure that the pass percentage went up even higher provided they were not drafted for other purposes by the Government. He expressed concern that even before the new academic year was to begin the Government was preparing additional work for the teachers.

The PRTU president expressed concern over the delay in issuing order pertaining to upgradation of 232 Government schools in the State. He also criticised the delay in supply of textbooks. The headmasters were forced to make rounds of the godowns, he said, adding that the Government should supply textbooks at the school itself. He wondered how private schools got the textbooks before the reopening day.

Mr. Mohan Reddy urged the Government to fulfil its promise of training SC and ST teachers, who were recruited two years ago and regularise their services and release DA to teachers.

The PRTU State vice-presidents -- Bhoja Goud and Manohar, district general secretary, Ravi Kiran and associate president, Laxman, also spoke.
