MCD gives nod to prosecute officer

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JUNE 5. Sending a strong signal that there was no place for corruption and corrupt officials -- however powerful he might be -- in the civic body, the Congress-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi today gave permission to the CBI to initiate prosecution proceedings against Ashok Kumar, Chief Labour Welfare Officer (equivalent in rank to the post of Deputy Commissioner) for allegedly possessing properties disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The permission for proceedings -- the request for which was made by the CBI four to five months ago -- was given unanimously by the Appointments, Promotions, Disciplinary and Allied Matters Committee at its meeting at Town Hall here.

The CBI during its investigations -- following a raid some two years ago -- found Ashok Kumar of having properties worth several crores.

Among these included a building in the posh Roop Nagar area which was estimated to be worth Rs. 2.34 crores.

Notably while the meeting was going on, Ashok Kumnar and his supporters held a protest meeting and raised slogans outside the meeting hall.

The permission was given unanimously by members of the Committee, which also approved the proposal for a departmental inquiry against the official.

Arguing that his party's manifesto and agenda was to launch a fight against corruption, the Appointments Committee Chairman,

Braj Mohan Sharma, said: "We have been doing it from day one. Be it the Unit Area System for house tax or privatisation of toll- tax, all our move has been directed against fighting corruption in the MCD which we have inherited from the previous BJP regime.''

Referring to the Opposition BJP's allegation that his party was shielding a corrupt official: ''We did not want to pass on the buck in a hurry. The decision has been taken only eliciting the views of the Law Department and after a proper discussion among the Committee members.''
