Judge fails to decipher rap lyrics

LONDON: He may be an expert in the intricacies of the law, but a British judge has admitted the nuances of hip-hop are beyond him. High Court Judge Kim Lewison spent hours puzzling over the lyrics to a rap song before conceding on Thursday that terms such as "shizzle" and "mish mish man" were "for practical purposes a foreign language". Mr. Lewison had been asked to decide whether the group Heartless Crew had used the track `Burnin' without permission from its composer, Andrew Alcee. Alcee, a member of garage crew Ant'Ill Mob, said his copyright had been infringed and his reputation damaged when Heartless Crew used his song as background for a "derogatory" rap on their album `Crisp Biscuit'. The Heartless Crew version, Alcee said, contained references to drugs and violence.
