Letters to the Editor
Sir, Your Editorial' The Provident Fund dilemma ' (June 5) rightly concludes that there should be a convergence of economic and social objectives. With the Government's eyes set on the 2004 general election, the decision-makers have become blind to objectives other than political. It is a populist policy to dole out 9.5 per cent, when interest rates are touching their nadir. If the Government really wants to help and shield the lower income groups from the low interest rates, then the National Savings schemes and the Post Office schemes should have been left untouched or the rates reduced marginally, which is not so.
