The leopard which fell into a farm well at Dindigul on Friday.
The animal, which was apparently in search of food and water, came to a farm house at Pannaipatti, situated at the foothills of Thonimalai, part of Western Ghats, and assaulted a calf tied outside. On hearing the calf cry, the inmate, Palaniammal, shouted for help. In a fit of fear, the leopard left the injured animal and took a leap into a nearby field, thus falling into the well. Fortunately, it landed safely on the well's bed, as the water level was low. Palaniammal said the leopard had been struggling throughout the night to get out. After futile efforts, it lay down in a corner. The leopard's roar echoed the entire farmhouse. The animal did not touch the two kg of beef it was provided with. The Assistant Conservator of Forests, P.P. Vetri Pandiyan, informed the Wild Life Warden Office at Pollachi to send a rescue team.
