Thanjavur woman foils second marriage by husband

By Our Staff Reporter

Thanjavur June 6. After Vidya of Chennai, yet another woman has risen against injustice and had her husband arrested right at venue of a Kumbakonam marriage hall, where he was to take a second wife yesterday.

While Vidya alleged dowry harassment and called off her marriage hours before the knot was to be tied on June 4, Latha's case was `betrayal'. After a love affair, Latha and Sakthivelan, both of Thanjavur, got married on February 3 last year. But a few days ago came the news that a second marriage was being arranged for him.

Sakthivelan, she said, pleaded helplessness, saying his father insisted on his marrying again. Latha argued in vain with her father-in-law, Govindaraj. As Sakthivelan was to be married yesterday to Vani Sumathi, daughter of Ambikapathy of Kumbakonam, Latha approached the all-women police station here. A team of police lead by an inspector rushed to Kumbakonam and arrested Sakthivelan. He was produced in court and remanded to custody.
