Duleep Trophy may revert to old format

By Our Special Correspondent

Mumbai June 7. The Duleep Trophy tournament will be played after the Indian team's return from Australia in February 2004.

Captains and coaches of the 27 teams had on Friday offered constructive criticism and in one voice urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to revert to the old format. This is almost certain to be approved at the BCCI's Working Committee meeting in New Delhi on June 30.

The BCCI is also likely to favourably consider the suggestion made by the Chairman of the Technical Committee, Sunil Gavaskar, that the Duleep Trophy should be scheduled after the Indian team's return from Australia so that National players can take part in the tournament and lend more than a semblance of competitiveness to the tournament.

It's a step in the right direction towards making the Duleep Trophy a spectator event, but it would be interesting to see how far the BCCI will go and guarantee the participation of the National players.

Instances in the past have only demonstrated the star players' reluctance to take part in the premier tournament. The BCCI Presidents, too, have been generous in allowing players to withdraw from the tournament after a long and tiring tour.

The Programmes and Fixtures Committee of the BCCI, which met here on Saturday and finalised the draw for the Ranji Trophy tournament, also approved the itinerary for the home series against New Zealand and Australia and the 82-day tour to Australia.

"But the venue will for the two Tests and ten matches of the one-day series featuring India, New Zealand and Australia will be finalised at the Working Committee meeting in New Delhi," said Mr. S. Karunakaran Nair, Hon. Secretary, BCCI.

By rotation Mohali and Kanpur should host the two Test series against New Zealand, which would play two three-day games before the first Test. The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association and Mumbai Cricket Association had agreed to swap Test matches against the West Indies and New Zealand. Since Mumbai staged the first Test against Carl Hooper's West Indies last winter, it's Kanpur's to play host to the Kiwis.

The BCCI has decided not to apply the rotation policy for the matches not featuring India in the tri-series. In the normal course, Goa Cricket Association (GCA) would have been awarded a match, but since court cases are pending against it following allegations of mal-administration during the India-Australia match two years ago, Goa is unlikely to get a chance to host a one-day International.

The Challenger Trophy was not played last season. The BCCI has decided to advance the 2003-04 season either by scheduling the Zal Irani Cup between Mumbai and Rest of India or the Challenger Series (most likely in Mohali) for the N.K.P. Salve Trophy.
