East Zone sitting pretty

BANGALORE June 7. Batsmen floundered with indecisive shots as 16 wickets fell at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Saturday. On an opening day dominated by bowlers, Combined Zonal Academies XI mustered 79 for six in reply to East Zone's 222 in the Col. Hemu Adhikari Inter-Zonal Academies tournament match.

The Combined XI's innings never recovered from the early loss of opener Sanket Puranik, castled by seamer Sourav Sarkar. Sanket was dismissed in the first over of the innings and with the middle order also failing, an early finish on Sunday is well on the cards.

Skipper Tahir Abbas promised much with a rasping cut of Dhiraj Goswami. However, Tahir, after a terrible mix-up that caused Pramod Das' run-out, was a forlorn batsman as he plodded without a cause against Dhiraj and was trapped plumb.

And with a few batsman fishing outside the off-stump, Dhiraj's celebrations had an extended run. The seamer claimed four wickets.

Earlier, East Zone innings thrived on opener Subhojit Paul's 56 and Debabrata Das's 65. East however faltered as two run outs left a gaping hole in the middle overs.

Debabrata Das's scamper towards the crease proved futile as a Tahir Abbas's throw found its mark and with left arm spinner Asif Murtaza (three for 73) and seamer Praveen Kumar (three for 35) bowling niggardly spells, the East innings paused at 222 in 80.3 overs.

Batsmen however had a better day at the WAP Ground as North Zone posted 328 in 93.3 overs against West Zone. Vikram Dhariwal (88) and Vishwas Bhalla (66 n.o.) topped the batting charts while spinner Anand Bochre bagged five wickets.

At close, West scored 23 for no loss in six overs.

East Zone 222 in 80.3 overs (Debabrata Das 65, Subhojit Paul 56, Avik Chowdhary 39, Subit Biswal 30, Praveen Kumar three for 35, A. Murtaza three for 73) vs Combined Zonal Academies XI 79 for six in 17 overs (Dhiraj Goswami four for 42).

North Zone 328 in 93.3 overs (Vikram Dhariwal 88, Vishwas Bhalla 66 not out, Sunny 49, Anand Bochre five for 92, Yusuf Pathan four for 90) vs West Zone 23 for no loss in six overs.
