Geetika, Gurbinder settle for silver

NEW DELHI JUNE 7. The continental wrestling heavyweights reaped rich harvest as India faltered miserably in the gold medal bouts on the third day of the 16th Asian championship here on Saturday.

Iran and Kazakhstan cornered the major part of the pie in the men's section, while the Japan shockingly put India on the hold in the women's segment.

The much-touted Geetika Jakhar either fought like a novice or she was totally out of sync with herself. Japan's Ayako Shoda raced to a 6-0 lead in the first half of the women's 63-kg final to down Geetika morally, much before the contest had ended.

There was just one chance Geetika had when she got hold on Ayako left foot with a few seconds remaining in the first half. But the Japanese exhibited good technique and recovered well in time before any damage was done and went into the half-time with the luxury of 7-0 lead.

Something definitely seemed wrong with Geetika. She kept looking at the scoreboard, but failed to break the zero mark. At 8-0, Ayako flipped Geetika on the mat for a three-pointer forcing the referee to announce her the winner by technical fall.

A few minutes before Geetika was subdued, Gurbinder Singh wrote a similar tale for himself, on the same mat. In the men's 66-kg Greco-Roman class, Olympian Gurbinder was routed by the defending Asian champion from Iran.

The difference between Zeidvand and Gurbinder was so wide that the Indian virtually gave up the contest in the first half itself. Twice Parviz picked up Gurbinder by the waist and tried to twist him. Though he failed to pin him on the mat, Parviz nevertheless earned two three-pointers. Gurbinder's resilience was finished by then.

Parviz, the Busan Asian Games bronze medallist, increased his lead to 8-0 before Gurbinder managed to snatch one consolation point.

The only solace was that Gurbinder lasted for full six minutes while Geetika went down with more than two minutes remaining on the board.

In addition to the two silver medals India won, there were two bronze medals also. Men's freestyler in 55-kg class, Kripa Shankar won the play-off for the third place against Bauyezhan Orazhalyev of Kazakhstan. Kripa Shankar led 2-1 at the half time, but Orazhalyev stole one point in the second half forcing the extra-time. The Indian did well in the clinch and earned the needed one point.

Kamini Yadav was the other medallist. She won the bronze medal bout by pinning down Phyam Thimai Phuong of Vietnam in the second half. Kamini led 10-0 and before the referee could stop the contest, she floored the Vietnamese.

Medal-wise, Iran won all the three golds on offer in the men's freestyle while Korea, Japan and Tajikistan settled for a silver medal each. India, Mongolia and Kazakhstan consoled themselves with a bronze medal each.

In the men's Greco-Roman style, Kazakhstan had two gold medals followed by Iran, which earned one medal each of three different hues. Japan registered his dominance in the women's section with two gold and a silver medal.

Earlier in the morning, India's Commonwealth Games champion, Palwinder Singh Cheema, won his third league round in the men's freestyle superheavy class and made it to the final. India could hope for a few more medals, one each from freestyle and Greco-Roman.

The 74-kg grappler Sujit Mann made it to the semifinals of the freestyle class while Virender Singh will contest in the bronze medal bout, in the 120-kg Greco-Roman style. Another medal, from Kiran Sihag, in the women's 67-kg is a forgone conclusion as there were only two entries in this weight category.
