Letters to the Editor
Sir, This has reference to the article IIT graduates in the IAS by T.K. Ramachandran (June 3). The IITians are a better lot, not only the cream but also the privileged ones to enjoy a cosy and well-set world-class academic atmosphere and facilities. However, it would be worthwhile to select and train candidates for the civil services at/after their schooling, as done for entry into the Defence Services, through the National Defence Academy or as followed by the Railways. The proposal would put a bind on the subject of career-conversion after graduation. If a second entry option at graduate-level in a limited way is to be provided for entry into the IAS, the Defence Services model can be adopted. Grooming and continuous training is the secret of success. V. Narasimhan, Srirangam,T.N. Sir, There was a time when very few engineers and doctors entered the civil services, not because they did not want to get into administration but because the pattern of the examination was such. Many doctors wanted to write the examinations, but did not want to read subjects such as history, economics or politics. Better sense prevailed among our politicians when they thought that better brains could administer better, at least in areas where technical expertise was required, thus paving the way for the introduction of technical subjects in the syllabus. If a XII class `bottomer' with a B.A. degree can enter the civil services, why not a topper, who had burnt the midnight oil when others were sleeping? Y. N. I. Anand, Madurai, T.N.
