Letters to the Editor
Sir, Imtiaz Ahmad's article The dowry scourge (June 6) is a clear and dispassionate analysis. However, I disagree with him when he says that the Dowry Prohibition Act has failed because it does not ensure property rights for women. This is strange, since equal inheritance rights have been enjoyed by women for long. The reason for the continuance of this practice could be because the existing laws do not take into account the traditionally widespread notion that the woman ceases to be part of her parent's family upon marriage and hence, whatever is her due is to be settled at the time of marriage.
