Sir, When the new telephone tariff was announced, the pulse rate for a local call from landline to cell was fixed at 30 seconds. There was hue and cry from the public and some MPs from the Telugu Desam Party, the Samata Party and even the BJP walked out of Parliament protesting the hike. Finally, the Communications Minister, Arun Shourie, placed the matter before the Prime Minister. It was then announced that the calls would be calculated at 60 seconds instead of 30. Surprisingly, a BSNL advertisement (The Hindu, May 29) details that the pulse rate would be 30 seconds, effective from May 17. Has the Prime Minister's decision been given the go by? B. Srinivasan, Chennai
