The Asian youth chess championship, only two days old, has also had its share of upsets already. In the second round at Hotel Asma Tower on Sunday, India's Rahul Sangma, the fourth seed in the boys' under-14 section, was beaten by Toufiqhi Tamijani Homayoon of Iran. P.K. Jayasree, seeded second in the girls' under-12, went down to compatriot Pon. N. Krithika, while R. Rajasurya from Madurai scored her second straight win against a higher-rated rival when she defeated eighth seed Kiran Monisha Mohanty in the girls' under-14. In the boys' under-12 section, S. Nitin did well to hold the top seed Le Quang Liem of Vietnam. The top three seeds in the boys' under-14, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam and G. Rohit and Abhijeet Gupta won their games, while in the girls' under-14, top seed Mary Ann Gomes came back into form with a victory against Sia Xin Yun Suzanna of Singapore, and second seed G. Pratheeka took her tally to two points, beating Ketaki Kulkarni. The Indian Airlines-sponsored Parimarjan Negi was impressive in his win against S. Ravi Teja in the boys' under-10. On the boys' under-14 top board, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, beat G.N. Gopal in 45 moves, with the Indian, who employed Panov-Botvinnik Attack against Caro-Kann Defence, blundering a piece. Rahul, playing on the white side of a French Defence, lost in 48 moves, blundering an exchange, while Rohit defeated T.U. Naveen Kanna in 31 moves of Philidor Defence. Nitin faced Sicilian Defence from Le Quang Liem and arrived at a rook-pawn ending, `which ended in a draw after 68 moves. Krithika won in 58 moves of Falkbeer Counter Gambit, as Jayasree blundered a rook in the ending. Rajasurya was also a beneficiary of a blunder, of an exchange, as she beat Kiran in 47 moves of Sicilian Defence. The results (second round; Indians unless specified): Boys: Under-14: G.N.
