Coup attempt in Mauritania

NOUAKCHOTT (Mauritania): Fighting erupted on Sunday in the capital of the Arab-dominated west African nation of Mauritania in an apparent coup attempt against the country's pro-West leader, residents and news reports said. The reported coup attempt follows a crackdown on alleged Islamic extremists by the Mauritanian President, Maaouya Sid'Ahmed Ould Taya (in the picture). The Arab TV channels Al-Jazeera and al-Arabiya TV reported clashes and tank cannon fire around the presidential palace in what they described as a coup attempt. Mr. Ould Taya's whereabouts were not immediately known. Residents reached by telephone in the capital, Nouakchott, said they began hearing explosions at around 2 a.m. local time. Qatar-based Al-Jazeera reported heavy clashes near the palace and state radio station, which was off the air.
