Letters to the Editor
Sir, __ When Ms. Jayalalithaa won the election I was among those who rejoiced remembering how constructive her policies were during her earlier term as Chief Minister. Decades ago I was a student of Presidency College, Madras now Chennai, and stayed at the Queen Mary's hostel. Both the institutions lent dignity and prestige to the old Presidency (forerunner of Tamil Nadu). In March this year a classmate and distinguished educationist, Ms. R. Chandy, took me to see our old college and residence. We could only see the latter from a distance as the gates were closed. However, we visited the Presidency College, It was painful to see the dirty and derelict condition of the whole college. We decided we should write to the Chief Minister and she would ensure that discipline was restored to the institution and dignity to the building that housed it. Imagine our horror when we heard that the Queen Mary's College hostel and possibly other university buildings were to be demolished under the Chief Minister's orders. We refuse to believe this of Ms. Jayalalithaa. Some vandal must have thought it up and attributed it to her. We pray that she would soon scotch the rumour and visit the colleges and update their facilities. K. Rukmini Menon, Former Ambassador, New Delhi
