Maharashtra
By Our Special Correspondent
Initially, police registered a case of house-break and murder. Rape was included in the case only after the intervention of local leaders. The 14-year-old girl's mother and a member of the family are now being treated at a Nashik hospital for injuries. Nashik city observed a `bandh' on Sunday to protest the role of the local police. More protests are being planned. The State Government has announced an ex gratia of Rs. 1.75 lakhs to the family and has ordered the transfer the Nashik Police Commissioner, Prakash Pawar. At a press conference here today, the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Nitin Gadkari, alleged that police took the bodies to Sinner, a town 20 km away, for post-mortem and not to Nashik where the district civil hospital is located. He said that police officers seemed to be trying to hush up the matter. He said he had met the raped woman at the hospital who told him that the attackers had spoken in Hindi. They also said that police would do them no harm as they belonged to the Gawli gang. He demanded the resignation of the Deputy Chief Minister, Chhagan Bhujbal, who holds the Home portfolio.
