The allocation to the Tirupati Municipality is said to be the highest to be made to any single municipality in the Rayalaseema region. This follows the hectic parleys the Municipal Chairperson, K.Sankar Reddy, had with the Principal Secretary and Secretary, Municipal Administration, at Hyderabad. The municipality has already completed computerisation of its departments handling the property tax, UDS charges, tap tax etc to ensure a hassle-free and transparent operation. Computerisation of other departments is under way in addition to the creation of a website on the various schemes available in the municipality and the developmental works completed. Mr. Sankar Reddy struck a note of optimism that the long-pending local fund audit of the municipal accounts for the last several years would be completed soon as the Government has given the municipality permission to engage the services of retired auditors and chartered accountants to get the accounts ready for LF audit.
Rainwater harvesting
The Government is said to have fixed targets for all the municipalities in the State with regard to the number of water harvesting pits/structures to be developed in their territories. Accordingly the Tirupati Municipality is given a overall target of 1285 pits with the following break-up: 71 pits in various apartment buildings, 50 in govt buildings, 1000 in residential buildings, 100 on campuses of educational institutions, 10 in parks and playgrounds, 40 near borewells, 10 in hospital premises. As a follow-up and to motivate the owners, contractors and the construction masthries/workers and also to impart them training in the construction of the rainwater harvesting structures, the Tirupati Municipality today got a training class organised for their benefit by inviting two resource persons-- R.K.Srinivas and Sallahuddin from the Department of Environment, Government of India. The Municipal Commissioner, Engineer, Town Planning officer and their entire staff also attended the training classes besides the Chairman, K.Sankar Reddy.
