TRAI to simplify phone tariff plans

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JUNE 9. The TRAI has begun the process for simplifying phone tariff information tables following representations pointing out that they are specified in a manner which makes it difficult to know their financial implications.

During its internal analysis, the TRAI also noted that a number of tariff packages combine monthly recurring charges with relatively low call charges.

As a result the effective call charge paid by the subscriber is more than the amount indicated as call charges.

The intention is to direct companies to present the packages in a manner that will help customers to be better aware of the overall financial expenditure incurred under a particular tariff package.

The new format should also help consumers compare various tariff packages being advertised.

The TRAI has also hosted a model tariff table on its website and sought feedback from subscribers within two weeks.
