Heatwave abates in north India

CHANDIGARH JUNE 9. The maximum temperatures continued to stay a few degrees below normal for the second day today at most places in northern states, providing relief to the people who had been suffering under blistering heat for the past fortnight.

Mercury stayed two degrees below normal at Ambala in Punjab to record 38.1 degree celsius while Hisar in Haryana at a high of 41.2 degree celsius was also cooler by a degree, according to the Meteorological Department here.

Chandigarh and its neighbouring towns of Panchkula and SAS Nagar (Mohali) recorded a high of 37.4 degree celsius, down three degrees.

The city witnessed dusty weather and the sun remained hidden for most part of the day.

Amritsar also enjoyed some pleasant weather as the high there settled at 34.8 degree celsius, down six degrees, while Ludhiana at 37.4 degree celsius and Patiala at 37.9 degree celsius, were down five and three degrees, respectively.

State capitals Shimla and Srinagar enjoyed some fine weather today, recording maximums of 29.5 degree celsius and 23 degree celsius, respectively.

Sundernagar and Bhuntar in Himachal Pradesh saw the mercury settle at 37.4 degree celsius and 36.4 degree celsius, respectively.

The MET office said an upper air cyclonic circulation lay over north Rajasthan and adjoining central Pakistan, which could keep the mercury down in the region tomorrow as well.

Rain or thundershowers have been predicted at a few places in Himachal Pradesh, while duststorm and thunderstorm may hit some places in Punjab and Haryana over the next two days. - PTI
