SFI march turns violent

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM June 9. Three policemen, including a Sub-Inspector of police, were injured when SFI activists protesting against the engineering college fees hike pelted stones at a police cordon near the Public Library at Palayam.

The injured officer was identified as Rajendran, Station House Officer, Museum police station. The trouble started when the 50-odd activists were stopped by the police from marching to the engineering counselling centre at the LMS. They hurled themselves against the barricades placed in front of the Public Library. Those in the rear ranks started pelting stones at the policemen who were deployed at the spot in full riot gear.

Later, the marchers staged a dharna under the leadership of the SFI State secretary, Biju, and dispersed peacefully.

The Cantonment police have registered a case of rioting and unlawful assembly against the activists in this connection.
