5-year-old burglary case solved

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI JUNE 9. Five years after a burglar struck at a house in Choolaimedu and decamped with a huge booty of jewels, the city police nabbed the culprit and also recovered the part of the stolen goods. The house of Narayanan, employed with a private firm in Manali was burgled in February 1998 and 36 sovereigns of jewels were stolen. Investigations did not yield any result.

Last month, Narayanan submitted an appeal to the City Police Commissioner, who directed that fresh investigations be launched. According to sources, old files of habitual offenders began to be perused. They picked up Peer Mohammed, a fish vendor who belonged to Arakkonam, recently and interrogated him. Peer Mohammed, who had already been detained four times under the Goondas Act, had burgled the house and pledged the stolen jewels with a pawn broker in Tiruvallur. A police team went to Thiruvallur and were able to retrieve 27 sovereigns and restored it to Narayanan.

Peer Mohammed had struck at several houses at Poonamallee, Kilpauk, Nungambakkam and Choolaimedu areas.
