Sir, Imtiaz Ahmad's article, `The dowry scourge' ( June 6 ) seems to suggest the woman's share in her family property as the euphemism for dowry. It has maintained that giving woman her share in the family assets would stem the dowry menace as her rapacious in-laws would know that the bride would secure her share of the family wealth at the proposed time. However, this has taken only a partial view. While the affluent lot would inherit the property, the have-nots would continue to be tortured. Is the girl unaccompanied by an abyss of wealth not acceptable in this patriarchal society? Monika Shinghal, Bareilly, U.P.
