Donors' meet

By P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE JUNE 10. The Tokyo Conference on Reconstruction and Development of Sri Lanka today elicited pledges from donors about their "willingness to extend assistance to (the tune of) a cumulative estimated amount in excess of $4.5 billions over the four-year period from 2003-2006''. At the conclusion of the two-day multilateral meeting, Japan said the amount included its own pledge of up to $1 billion. Disappointed over the absence of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam at this meeting, Japan would still urge the organisation to ``quickly'' resume negotiations with Colombo so that "further assistance to northern and eastern areas of Sri Lanka would become possible''.
