Narayanan is Chief Secretary in-charge

By Our Special Correspondent

Chennai June 11. In a significant move, the Finance Secretary, N. Narayanan, has been given full additional charge of the post of Chief Secretary, until the incumbent, Lakshmi Pranesh, returns from her fortnight-long leave.

Mr. Narayanan will be holding charge only in the interim until Ms. Pranesh returns to work on June 25 after celebrating her son's wedding.

Mr. Naryanan, a Special Commissioner grade officer, now gets the distinction of becoming the first non-Chief Secretary grade officer to be vested with full additional charge of the post of Chief Secretary.

In the State IAS cadre, there are at least five Chief Secretary-grade officers including Chattrasal Singh, Sukavanesvar and Om Kumar, who could have been given the additional charge. But, sources say, the interim elevation for Mr.Narayanan, who is also the Development Commissioner, is indeed a prelude to his being appointed the next Chief Secretary in August. Mr. Narayanan was expected to be promoted to the Chief Secretary grade by July-end, when Mr. Chattrasal Singh, the present Vigilance Commissioner, retired.
