Yaseen Malik arrested

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR JUNE 12. The senior Hurriyat leader and JKLF chairman, Mohammad Yaseen Malik, was today arrested in Anantnag district while participating in a signature campaign on India-Pakistan talks to resolve the Kashmir issue. His arrest led to violent protests in the Maisuma locality here.

Mr. Malik, along with two senior party leaders, Javed Ahmad Mir and Noor Mohammad Kalwal, was taken into custody at Heller in Kokernag area. He began the signature campaign on Wednesday and attracted large crowds. Police took him into custody when he was on his way to Achabal village.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kashmir zone, K. Rajindra, said Mr. Malik was arrested for "indulging in unlawful activities".

Soon after the news of his arrest reached Srinagar, people came out on the streets in Maisuma and staged a protest. The JKLF has condemned the arrest. "It goes against the statement of the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, only two days ago that every political leader is free to express his views," it said.
