Cherono beats El Guerrouj to 5,000m gold

OSTRAVA (Czech Republic) JUNE 13. Stephen Cherono of Kenya outpaced multi-world record holder Hicham el Guerrouj of Morocco in the 5,000m showcase race at the Golden Spike meet on Thursday.

The two athletes entered the final stage of the race shoulder to shoulder, but the 20-year-old Cherono accelerated in the last 100m and finished in 12m 48.81s with el Guerrouj finishing second in 12:50.24. Cherono's countryman James Kwalia was third in 13:04.72.

El Guerrouj didn't complain about the loss: ``I've done the most I am capable of,'' he said.

``The 5,000 is a fantastic race. I still have to tune up many things but I will continue,'' el Guerrouj, ranked No. 1 in the IAAF and holder of world records at the 1,500m, 2,000m and mile-long distances.

El Guerrouj earlier announced that he was planning to concentrate on the 1,500 and 5,000m races for this season and aims to compete at both these distances at the World championships in Paris, France, in August and also at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

``It was a fantastic duel,'' said Cherono, who set the best time of the season in this distance.

In another key event at the 42nd edition of the meet, world champion Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic, No. 2 in the IAAF overall standings, confirmed his supremacy in the 400m men's hurdles, claiming his 17th successive race in 48.10s and setting a season's best in his first race this year.

Jiri Muzik of the Czech Republic came in second in 48.63 while Eric Thomas of the United States was third with the same timing.

Three-time Olympic winner and triple world champion Jan Zelezny of the Czech Republic justified the expectations of a boisterous sell-out crowd of some 22,000 spectators and won the men's javelin, throwing a solid 88.99m in his only appearance on home soil this season.

``It was not a bad performance, but today I would need another three or four attempts to throw more,'' Zelezny said.

In the 100m race, Mark Lewis-Francis of Britain ran a 10.07s to beat Kim Collins of St. Kitts who was second in 10.09. Collins' fellow Briton and European record holder Dwain Chambers was third in 10.16.

Russia's Tatyana Polnova claimed the women's pole vault, clearing 4.70m, beating world record holder Stacy Dragila of the United States who could only manage a 4.58. ``I am really happy, it was a very good result,'' Polnova said.

In other events, Kasja Bergquist of Sweden cleared 2.01m to bag the women's high jump gold while Cuba's Yamile Aldama won the women's triple jump, leaping to a distance 15.00m, the best performance in the world this season and improving on her own previous mark by 2-cm.

The 18-event Golden Spike was the first part of a newly established Super Grand Prix series, second in the IAAF hierarchy after the prestigious Golden League. — AP
