Rajapara extends Muraleedharan

KOCHI JUNE 13. Gujarat's nine-year-old Ankit R. Rajapara, fresh from his Asian Youth Championship experience in Kozhikode, forced the seasoned top seed M.B.Muraleedharan to a 56-move battle on the opening day of the 15th Cusat Open all-India FIDE-rated chess tournament at the Cochin University's SMS Auditorium here on Friday.

"The young ones are getting stronger each year," said Kerala's Muraleedharan, a former National `B' runner-up and a former four-time champion here, after the first round victory.

The big seeds, including Andhra's P.D.S. Girinath, Tamil Nadu's Ram S. Krishnan and Kerala's defending champion O.T. Anilkumar, were all successful in the opening round but Kerala champion P. Sreekumar, the seventh seed, was forced to a draw by C.R. Arun Hariharan.

The Cochin University Registrar, Dr. K.V. Kunhikrishnan, inaugurated the six-day event.

The second round and third round matches would be held at 9 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. respectively on Saturday

Azeezuddin, Baby Mathew drew with U.S. Satheesan, U.C. Mohanan bt Balaga Ravikumar, K. Biju lost to P.V. Girish, Nikilesh Kumar bt V. Jayaram.

T.R. Shanmugananthan bt Bindu Priya, Sukhpal Singh Kalsi drew with A. Chudar, Cija Augustus lost to Binju Oommen, Konakanchi Ninad bt K.R. Dhanulal, Dinesh Babu Balla lost to K.R. Madhusoodanan, P.V.V. Sheshu drew with Edwin Joy, M.M. Eugene lost to R. Ganesh Bhat, M. Vinoth Kumar bt S. Ganesh Babu, Hemant Kumar Singh lost to S. Jayaprakash, Jithin Saji Issac lost to B. Sivasankar, Doodu John lost to P. Sreekanth, Saket Kumar bt Joseph C. Paul.
