Facilitate peace initiative, Mufti tells militants

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR JUNE 14. The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, today asked militants to respond positively to the people's yearning for peace, end killings, and create an atmosphere for making the fresh Indo-Pakistan initiatives successful.

Replying to a question raised by G.N. Shaheen of the National Conference in the Legislative Council today, the Mufti said that it was perhaps for the first time that simultaneous initiatives were on to address both the external and internal dimensions of the Kashmir issue. "While the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, broke the ice in the Valley by inviting Pakistan for talks, the Centre's interlocutor, N. N. Vohra too started interacting with a cross-section of people within the State" he said, adding that the Government wanted to create a conducive atmosphere for a peaceful solution to the Kashmir issue. On the confidence-building measures initiated by the Centre, he said steps were being taken to resume air, rail and road links between the two countries.
