Sir, I refer to your report `Hindustan Lever clarifies on mercury wastes' (June 14). The Hindustan Lever mercury thermometer factory, which was closed in a foreign land due to environmental concern, has been set up in Kodaikanal knowing fully well that mercury, which is a deadly toxic substance, would cause great damage to the environment and workers. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board should initiate legal proceedings against Hindustan Lever Limited not only for the environmental hazard it has created and also to provide compensation to the affected workers.
