Criticism of Pope termed 'disdainful'

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JUNE 16. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) today described the criticism of the Pope, John Paul II, by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, and the RSS as ``disdainful'', and ``an insult to all who value freedom of conscience and human dignity''.

In a statement issued here, the CBCI sought to highlight the fact that the Pope's recent statement about anti-conversion laws introduced by some States was in defence of every individual's fundamental right to choose his/her faith. ``His observation on the anti-conversion laws in some States in India only reflects his commitment to the cause of humanity and the dignity of each human person.''
