No review of Israel policy: Jamali

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD June 17. Hours after the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, hinted that Pakistan should re-consider its policy of no-ties with Israel, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, on Tuesday categorically ruled out the possibility of recognising Israel.

In the course of an interview to a local television here, Gen. Musharraf had argued on Monday that in view of the changing international scenario Pakistan should review its policy towards Israel.

Ironically in an interview to an English daily, the Pakistan Prime Minister, Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, said that "god forbid. Zafarullah Jamali will be the last person to do any such thing''(of recognising Israel). He was responding to a question whether Islamabad would recognise Israel or rollback its nuclear programme after the Camp David meeting between Gen. Musharraf and the U.S. President, George W. Bush.

``Any Pakistani, mind my words, any Pakistani will never favour any such thing, which would erode the interest of the country'', Mr. Jamali told the daily.

Talking to newsmen in Parliament House here today, Mr. Rashid Ahmed said that Mr. Jamali had already given a clear statement on the Israel policy and there should be no doubt about it.

When his attention was drawn to Gen. Musharraf's statement on the subject, he said, the President had referred to the "Middle East peace road map'' according to which Palestine was to be made a state.
