Maran's son will foot the medical bill: Karunanidhi

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI June 18. The entire medical expenses for the ailing Union Minister and DMK leader, Murasoli Maran, now undergoing treatment in the United States, will be fully borne by his son, Kalanidhi Maran.

The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, said in a release today that usually the Union Government bore the medical expenses of its Ministers.

Though there were several precedents, Mr. Karunanidhi said he had written to the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, conveying that Mr. Kalanidhi Maran would bear the entire medical expenses.

(The decision comes in the wake of reports in a section of the media that the treatment for Mr. Maran had so far cost Rs. 10 crores and involved a daily bill of about $ 10,000 at the Houston hospital.)

"I would also like to inform those newspapers which are wrongly reporting some facts that it was Mr. Maran's son who was also bearing the expenses of the family members staying with the Union Minister," he said adding that he would also like to point out that already Mr. Maran had paid the medical bill for his father's treatment at the Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.
