SRINAGAR JUNE 19. The All-India Defence Committee for Syed Abdur Rehman Geelani has demanded a fair trial for the former Delhi University teacher facing death sentence in the December 13 Parliament attack case. Releasing the committee's latest report here, one of its members and lawyer, Nandita Haksar, condemned the Special Public Prosecutor, Gopal Subramaniam's plea for enhanced death sentence. "From the day one it has been a bad case in law and the death sentence has been pronounced on two sentences of a reported telephonic conversation which has been wrongly interpreted," she told a news conference here. Ms. Haksar, who released the "real translation" of the 2.16 minutes conversation between Mr. Geelani and his brother, said that the translation was done by Rashid, a fruit businessman in Azadpur who studied up to 6th standard only, and "our translation was done by veteran trade union leader Sampat Prakash and Sanjay Kak, but the court dismissed it saying that it had come from the interested people". She argued that there had been no record of the calls made between 13th night and 15th of December. "We seek an explanation for that," she said. The Central Forensic Laboratory, Hyderabad, had also reported that it could ascertain the voice sample because the conversation was not discernable. Reiterating that the committee would defend Mr. Geelani till the last,Ms. Haksar said it was the question of policy on justice and peace. The committee headed by Rajni Kothari has Aruna Roy, Babu Mathew, Surendra Mohan, Prabash Joshi, Syeda Saiyidain Hameed, Arundhati Roy, Sandeep Panday, Sanjay Kak, Y.P. Chibber, Nandita Haksar and Sanjay Singh as its members.
