The Crime Branch got the lead about the accused, Dilip Kumar, while investigating a kidnapping case registered in March last year, in which a four-year-old girl had gone missing from Najafgarh in South-West Delhi. In a bid to get her whereabouts, the police and her parents got several hue and cry notices published in newspapers. An award was also announced for anyone providing genuine information in this regard. On June 4, the girl's grandfather, N.L. Gupta, received a call on his mobile phone by a person who claimed that he was a Jaish-e-Mohammad agent. Posing himself as the kidnapper of the girl, he demanded Rs. 5 lakhs for her safe release. After having made several such calls, the accused sent a letter repeating the same demand. On receipt of the letter on June 16, Mr. Gupta informed the Inter-State Cell. The threat calls were traced to Ghaziabad, following which Dilip was arrested. During interrogation, he disclosed that he had sent ransom letters to others as well. Dilip, who is a school dropout, said he used to go through details of missing children being published in newspapers. Having collected sufficient information, he would contact the parents of the missing children claiming that he had kidnapped them. Using this modus-operandi, Dilip managed to extort money from people on several occasions.
