Immigration law blocked

BERLIN: A hotly contested immigration bill making its way through the German Parliament for the second time was blocked on Friday by conservative States which want tighter limits on the influx of foreign workers and refugees. The German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder's Government has championed the bill, in the works since 2000, as a way to fill jobs in globally competitive fields where Germany has a shortage, such as computer programmers. The governing centre-left majority passed the bill this year in the lower house (the picture shows a policewoman with a face mask coming out of a house in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, where 36 illegal immigrants from China were tracked down recently).
