East Bengal too good for Eastern Rly.

KOLKATA JUNE 20. East Bengal began its quest for the Calcutta Football League Super Division title in right earnest humbling Eastern Railway 4-1 on a rain-effected glue pot of a field on Friday.

The NFL champion rode on Sur Kumar Singh's brace and a strike each from Bhaichung Bhutia and Debjit Ghosh to make light of the challenge posed by Eastern Railway.

The Railway outfit did pull one back after conceding three goals but the supremacy of the local giant was never in doubt.

In another important encounter, Tollygunge Agragami and Railway Football Club tied 0-0 when the referee called a halt to the proceedings owing to poor underfoot conditions at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium.

Newly promoted Ever-Ready and Kolkata Port Trust were involved in a 1-1 draw.

Pre-season physical preparation came very handy for East Bengal as it outran and outscored despite ball not rolling properly on the rain-drenched East Bengal ground turf.

Despite all these, East Bengal's forward momentum was quick and calculative.

Sur Kumar Singh's 45th second shot went in off a defender to give East Bengal the much-needed lead.

Debjit Ghosh headed home the team's second in the 38th before Bhaichung Bhutia made it 3-0 four minutes before halftime.

Then came the goal from Eastern Railway through its Nigerian recruit Henry Nonso Odogo in the 62nd minute.

His 20-yard right footer caught the entire East Bengal defence by surprise. Eastern Railway's hopes of making a match of this game was dashed with Sur Kumar slamming home his second goal in the 80th minute.

Ever-Ready drew the first blood through Eugene Gray but the success was short-lived as Port's Kaustav Ghosh equalised through a penalty to share the points. Mohammedan A.C. beat West Bengal Police 2-0 in the fourth match of the day.
