Corporal punishment issue being politicised: CPI (M)

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry June 20. The Pondicherry CPI (M) Secretary, T. Murugan said here today that while it was basically objectionable for any teacher or authority to resort to corporal punishment inflicting pain on students, the issue of a schoolboy allegedly beaten by a teacher recently in a private school was sought to be politicised by some outfits.

He said that an outfit had come out with a plan to stage demonstration at the school to protest against the beating of the boy by the teacher in the school. The outfit championing religious tenets had made the announcement and this was clear proof of how the issue was being politically utilised by the `pro Hindutva' organisation.

Mr. Murugan said that he was really shocked to see that the Education Minister K Lakshminarayanan had acted at a lightning speed by initiating action against the teacher and the issue was intensified to such an extent as to even arrest the teacher. This was a clear case of overplaying the issue as the school authorities themselves could have been let to take action .
