Tigress rescued

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI JUNE 20. Wildlife authorities today rescued a full-grown tigress which strayed into human habitation near Aaliyar in Coimbatore district.

The tigress was tranquilised and safely taken to Top Slip.

According to the Wildlife Warden, Pollachi, V.Ganesan, the animal strayed into the Aaliyar area a few days ago and was found inside a privately-owned coconut grove.

This afternoon, a team of officials led by the Top Slip Range Officer, Thangaraj Paneerselvam, used a dart to tranquilise the animal.

The operation took nearly half-an-hour and the animal was shifted to an enclosure before being taken to the Top Slip area.

The tigress will be released into Anaigundhi Shola inside the Indira Gandhi Wildlife National Park and Sanctuary, Mr. Ganesan said.

The rescued tigress has a special feature — the size of its palm.

Normally the hind leg palm of a tigress measures about 13 cm. If it is greater than that, then it is considered a male.

But to the surprise of the authorities, the rescued tigress has a palm size measuring over 14 cm.

Releasing the animal in the Anaigundhi Shola area will help monitor its movements, Mr. Ganesan added.
