Rain havoc in Mangalore; 3 killed

MANGALORE JUNE 22. Incessant rainfall in Dakshina Kannada District has left behind a trail of destruction and agony in Mangalore city and adjoining areas, claiming three lives and causing severe damage to property.

Most low-lying areas in Mangalore taluk experienced severe flooding and inundation in varied degrees.

The worst affected areas include Kavoor-Kulur in the Mangalore City Corporation limits and Vittla and Bajal, where two persons died and two others were injured.

Thirteen houses collapsed and 170 were partially damaged.

According to information provided by the Police Control Room, Sandhyalatha (16) was crushed to death under the debris of her house in Peraje in Vittla hobli owing to heavy rainfall on Saturday night.

Her mother, Chandraprabha, and brother, Prajwal (12), who were severely injured, have been admitted to hospital. In another incident, Jayaram (45) died when a portion of his house in Bajal in Mangalore taluk collapsed on Saturday night.

A person, identified as Kittu Madiwala, drowned in the Shambavi on Sunday.

According to reports, National Highway 17 was inundated between Surathkal and Mangalore at Kulur and Kottara Chowki, throwing traffic out of gear. Also, Kuloor-Jalligudde Road was completely cut off owing to the heavy rainfall.

At Karnad in Mulki hobli limits, a landslip that occurred on Sunday morning blocked a portion of NH 17. Meenakaliya, Kasaba, and Thota Bengre in Panambur Police limits have also been inundated, according to reports.

Two houses in those areas have been damaged and a road has been completely cut off. Floods have been reported from Panja, Karnire, and Kelayoor in Mulki and Chelar and Kolya II Stage in Surathkal. The district administration has stationed boats at several places including Panja, Karnire, and Chelar to rescue people in the wake of any eventualities.

At Kettikallu on National Highway 13 in Mangalore taluk, a portion of a hillock came down due to the torrential rainfall.
