The film star, Mammootty, will inaugurate the festival on September 21, which will be followed by the premiere of Murali Nair's `Arimbara', which was India's entry at Cannes this year.

Apart from the programmes that have been part of the festival all these years, Soorya is also beginning a `Ramayana Festival' from this year onwards. The six main parts of the epic will be presented on stage by various traditional art forms. Chakiar Koothu performance and a festival of classic Indian films, titled `Old is Gold' will be the specialities of the festival this time.

The film festival includes many mainstream movies from Malayalam and also films like `Bhavam', `Uthara', `Sthithi', `Bend it like Beckham', `Mr. and Mrs. Iyer', `Vir Savarkar' and the British production, `In the Name of Buddha', directed by Rajesh, a Keralite.

The `Old is Gold' section will have films like `Do Aankhein Baarah Haath', `Mrugaya', `Teesri Kasam', among others. Painting exhibition, ethnic food festival, crafts festival, artists' village and open forums will be part of the event.

The dance and music festival will feature senior artistes like K. J. Jesudas, Bombay Jayasree, Padma Subramaniam, Chitra Vishweshwaran, Daksha Seth, among many others. There will be a `Talk festival', a theatre festival, Katha and Kaviyarangu, video festival and the `Parambara' feature in which up and coming talents in the State will pay homage to their teachers through their performances.

The grand finale of the festival will be on November 11, with a Guru pooja, when veteran Bharathanatyam exponent, Nattuvan Paramasivam, will be honoured by Soorya.
