Heavy rain disrupts normal life in Kasaragod

KASARAGOD JUNE 22. Heavy rain for the last several days has disrupted normal life in the district destroying properties, crops and railway tracks.

Till today, the district has received 30 cm rainfall. However, there was some respite to the heavy downpour today. The rain has also disrupted rail traffic in this route today, as metals beneath the tracks at Udma near here have completely been washed away early this morning. Repeated instances of soil erosion have been posing threat to the rail traffic in the region since the monsoon began this year. Road traffic has been disrupted along the highway as rocks caved in near the Chandragiri bridge.

One person was washed away in the Neelithod river late last night. The deceased has been identified as Kalichanadukkam Valiyathodiyil Narayanan. One woman has been reported missing. Police said Vellachi (55) of Vellarikundu SC Colony was reported to have been washed away while attempting to cross a bridge across Neelithod. Her death has not been confirmed.

Heavy damage to properties in Kollambady, Kumbala, Thalangara, Neeleswaram and Arikkad Kadavath has been reported. Some persons were injured as their houses collapsed in the heavy rain at Anganur and Kumbala.

About a dozen houses in Deli, Hosdurg and Bandhadukka have been damaged in the rain. According to official estimates, as many as 57 houses were damaged, seven of them completely, in Kasaragod taluk alone.
