MLA turns against Mayawati

Jaipur June 22. The Uttar Pradesh MLA, Akhilesh Singh, who engineered a split in the Congress and helped the Chief Minister, Mayawati, consolidate her ranks in the face of an Opposition offensive, today turned against her, withdrawing support and accusing her of running the State Government like a ``gangster.''

Mr. Singh, who is absconding after being booked in connection with the murder of a Congress leader in Uttar Pradesh and carries a reward on his head, told reporters here that ``although I had withdrawn my support to the Mayawati Government long ago when I started opposing her I formally informed the Governor about my decision today.''

He said Ms. Mayawati was ``running her Government by creating terror and is behaving like a gangster instead of a politician.''

Alleging any one who opposes Ms. Mayawati ``is booked under false cases,'' he said her style of functioning had put a big question mark on democracy in the State.

Mr. Singh charged that the Chief Minister was using police officials to settle her personal and political scores.

He claimed that about two dozen BSP legislators might soon revolt against the Mayawati Government.

A few months ago, Mr. Singh had taken the lead in effecting a split in the Congress Legislature Party in Uttar Pradesh. — PTI
