Heavy rain disrupts rail traffic

By Our Correspondent

KARWAR JUNE 22. Konkan Railway traffic has been disrupted since Saturday night following landslip near a stretch of track between Ankola and Gokaran. All south-bound trains have been stopped at Ratnagiri and Mumbai and Delhi-bound trains are stranded at Mangalore Station. However, the Karwar-Goa-Mumbai line has not been affected.

According to Konkan Railway Corporation sources, Arun Ghosh, an assistant engine driver, was injured when his engine derailed due to the landslip. Debris is being cleared from the track and this may take a day or two.

Due to heavy rain in the entire coastal belt of Uttara Kannada District, all the five major rivers of the district — the Kali, the Gangavali, the Aghanashini, the Sharavati, and the Venkatpur — are flowing up to the brim. The district administration has alerted the people living on the riverbanks.

Ashok Bhat, Headquarters Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner, told The Hindu on Sunday that rescue teams were ready to tackle flood. Life-saving boats and other equipment had been kept ready too, he said.

Traffic on the national highways in the district too was affected for some time as large trees were uprooted, Mr. Bhat said. Heavy rain affected normal life in the coastal towns.
