Blast in Iraqi oil pipeline

BAGHDAD June 22. The U.S. military in Iraq today said there had been an oil pipeline explosion and fire near the town of Hit about 140 km northwest of Baghdad, but had no word on what had caused it. ``The cause of the fire was still under investigation,'' a U.S. military spokesman said, adding that there were no reports of casualties and that the fire was still blazing. It was not clear when the blast occurred.

An Iraqi oil ministry official said he had no word on the explosion, but that the section reported to be affected was part of a key pipeline between Iraq's northern and southern oilfields. — Reuters
