AUT for councils to streamline admissions

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE June 22. The Association of University Teachers has called upon the State Government to constitute district-level councils to streamline the admission process in private science and arts colleges.

Alleging most of them violated Government norms with regard to application fee and admission procedure, the president, N. Senthamarai, said in a statement that the Government should enforce the norms in arts and science colleges and initiate action against institutions which demand capitation fee.

The Government should prescribe a uniform, rationalised fee structure for all courses in these colleges. Private college managements claim that they did not collect capitation fee or violate the norms was ``far from truth''. While aided colleges implemented guidelines ``half-heartedly'', self-financing colleges ``blatantly'' flout them. Violation of admission rules affected the poor students, the statement said.

While the guidelines stressed that the application fee should not exceed Rs.25, advertisements reveal that the fee ranged from Rs.50-300. Filled-in applications were not registered and classified according to the reservation rule. Besides, many colleges were yet to constitute the admission committee.

To sensitise the public on such alleged flouting, the AUT would hold demonstrations whenever a case of violation was detected and would also distribute handbills to educate the people.
