Over 3,600 detained in police drive

NEW DELHI JUNE 22. At least 9,000 policemen, including Joint Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and other officers, went on a massive drive to round up suspects and miscreants on Saturday night.

During the night patrolling, the police put up 780 special pickets and mobilised 753 gypsies and motorcycles. At least 3,603 persons were detained for verification of their antecedents and 12,741 vehicles were checked. The police also issued strangers roll to as many as 4,807 persons. While 240 persons were arrested under various sections of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and 70 under the Delhi Police Act, more than 150 were booked for loitering.

Section 110 (G) of the CrPC was invoked against 51 habitual offenders. Also, 2,414 criminals were picked up for verification of their antecedents and means of livelihood. Arms Act, Gambling Act, Excise Act and other special and local laws were invoked against 157 persons. The police also managed to arrest seven Proclaimed Offenders and 74 wanted or active criminals. They also traced 159 registered Bad Characters. The police verified at least 86 hotels and guest houses to see if they were indulging in some illegal activities.

The Delhi Traffic police also joined the drive and had set up 78 checking points. A number of vehicles driving on high beam were challaned. Over a thousand persons were booked for dangerous driving, drunken driving, jumping traffic signals, driving without helmet and driving in "No entry'' zones. They impounded 32 vehicles and realised Rs. 1.2 lakh in cash as compounding amount.
