Jyoti who boarded a train leaving Secunderabad in a bid to "escape from the clutches of those running the orphanage'' and surfaced in Khammam on Saturday was brought to the State Home of the Woman and Child Welfare Department on Sunday. She led the officials to the Kukatpally area where she said the orphanage was located, but the two-hour journey through various residential colonies drew a blank. Police said the incoherent replies given by the girl gave rise to doubts about the claims. While Jyoti maintained that she was staying in the Kukatpally area for the past 10 years, her inability to locate the orphanage left everyone baffled. She refused to take any name or even give the landmarks that led to the orphanage. All she would say was that the home was run by a Christian missionary and that she was pursuing a bachelor's degree in Commerce. Asked to disclose her optional subjects, she drew a blank. Meanwhile, a couple belonging to Khammam district who saw the pictures of Jyoti in newspapers approached the Khammam Collector saying she appeared to be their lost child. Officials of the Woman and Child Welfare Department said the couple would be brought to the city for verifying their claim.
