Additional load-shedding lifted

Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JUNE 23. The Kerala State Electricity Board lifted the 30-minute additional load-shedding in the rural areas of the State today, following the continuing spell of good rainfall in the catchment areas of all hydel reservoirs.

Load-shedding in rural areas will now be for a duration of only 30 minutes as in the case of urban areas.

The duration was extended from 30 minutes to 60 minutes in rural areas in the first week of this month due to the poor storage position in hydel reservoirs.

In a press release issued here, the Electricity Minister, Kadavoor Sivadasan, said it might be possible to exempt all holidays, including Sundays, from load-shedding. "If the monsoon continues like this, we can even do away with load-shedding on all days,'' he said.

A decision on withdrawing the load-shedding on holidays would be taken before June 29, after reviewing the storage position in hydel reservoirs, he assured.

Mr. Sivadasan said water equivalent to 75.36 million units of electricity flowed into the reservoirs during the last two days.

The reservoirs now have water enough to generate a 322.26 million units of power.
