Cell operator lowers rate

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JUNE 24. Continuing the tariff war in the cellular sector, Idea Cellular today announced a rental of Rs. 169 per month along with two deposits totalling Rs. 1,000, and flat rate of Rs. 1.69 per minute for outgoing calls.

The STD rates will vary between Rs. 1.99 and Rs. 3.99, while SMS charges are Rs. 0.99 a message.

Customers have the option of choosing other packages that are available with this offer.

Under the `night package', call charges will be 69 paise a minute on additional payment of Rs. 69 and cell to call calls will be 99 paise for Rs. 79 extra.

Senior company official, Vikram Mehmi, said the new package was announced following realisation that the post-paid package had become less attractive than the pre-paid.

"We decided to correct this through our monthly rental, which is the major perceptional barrier for our customers," he said.

Idea, jointly promoted by Tata, Birla and AT and T, operates services in Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
